Barnes, Ernest William

   Bishop and Theologian.
Educated at the University of Cambridge, Barnes taught mathematics at the university before being ordained in 1902. He became a Canon of Westminster in 1918 and Bishop of Birmingham in 1924. He is primarily remembered for his radical views, calling into question the literal historical truth of the virgin birth and the bodily resurrection of Jesus. In addition he was a determined and courageous pacifist who unequivocally condemned the use of nuclear weapons.
